Obit - YOUNG WINSTON-SALEM Woodrow Wilson Young Aug. 02, 1921 - Oct. 05, 2012 One of our great American heroes departed his natural - born country today for his Heavenly country which needs no soldier to guard it. Our loving husband, Daddy, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, and uncle lived an amazing life of dignity and devotion to his precious wife Josephine. He served in WWII and was among the first soldiers to enter the Battle of the Bulge. After significant injuries during the war he spent hours in a Parisian hospital bed chiseling a wedding band from the steel remnants of an airplane propeller. Even after his wife became wheelchair bound over recent years, he was serving and transporting her until two weeks ago. Now he receives his reward. We were blessed to know and love him. Hebrews 11:15-16.

Mr. Woodrow Wilson Young, 91, of Winston-Salem, passed away Friday, October 5, 2012 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born August 2, 1921 in Stokes County to Foy Roscoe Young and Mamie Moran Young. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Etta Eaton and Virginia Lewis, four brothers; David, Grady, Grover and Elijah Young.

S/SGT Woodrow W. Young served in the Army, 3rd Army; Company A, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. Mr. Young served his country during WWII in the Battle of the Bulge and was also awarded the following medals: EAME Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, two Purple Hearts, World War II Victory Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. He retired from R.J Reynolds Tobacco Company after 33 years of service. Mr. Young was a member of Advent Moravian Church, in addition, a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veteran of the Battle of Bulge and a member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars in Clemmons.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 71 years; Josephine Cox Young of the home, one son, Larry Young and wife Etta of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Lauren Young and Dana Smith of Winston-Salem; three great-grandchildren, Mallory Smith, Mason Smith and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Young; one brother; Roscoe Young and wife Nita of Walnut Cove; two sisters, Laura Smith and husband Franklin of Kernersville, and Roxie Smith and husband Tommy of Walnut Cove.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Advent Moravian Church with the Rev. Keith White officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Advent Moravian Church, 1514 West Clemmonsville Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

Jo was born in Stokes County on May 30, 1923 to the late Clarence Everett and Mattie Tuttle Cox.

Jo loved to travel, and was able to visit 48 out of the 50 states here in America. She enjoyed playing cards and creating handmade bead necklaces, bracelets, and crocheting afghans.

Jo was a long time member of Advent Moravian Church and proud member of the DAR - Daughters of American Revolution.

She was preceded in death by husband, Woodrow Wilson Young.

Jo is survived by a son, Larry Young and wife Etta; grandchildren, Lauren Young and Dana Smith; great grandchildren, Mallory Smith, Mason Smith, and Elizabeth Young; sister-in-laws, Roxie Smith and husband Tommy and Laura Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, March 28, 2014 at Advent Moravian Church with Dr. Tim Sapp officiating. Burial will follow the service at Parklawn Memorial Park.
