Note on Husband: George YOUNG (1)

George may have died young as records show only the two sons born 1687 and 1689 and also show an Alice Young who married Nicholas Talent on 6 June 1695. It is possible this could be same Alice and explain why they only had 2 children.

Could his parents be Henry and Frances Young? In Barbados Records, George son of Henry and Frances was christened on 5July 1666. The earliest Young's arrived in Barbados in 1635 and were Andrew, Francis, Hartford, Marmaduke, John, Nathaniel, Richard, Samuel, Richard and William, a Henry came in 1663.

By 1660, Barbados generated more trade than all the other English colonies combined. It was surpassed by Jamaica in 1713. Even though, in 1730-31 the estimated value of the colony of Barbados was as much as 5,500,000 pounds. Bridgetown, the capital, was one of the three largest cities in British America (the other two were Boston, Massachusetts and Port Royal, Jamaica.) By 1700 the English West Indies produced 25,000 tons of sugar, compared to 20,000 for Brazil, 10,000 for the French islands and 4,000 for the Dutch islands.

The Young family was found in ancient records of Somersetshire before the year 1100.

Note on Wife: Alice POWELL

The first English ship touched the island on May 14th 1625 under the command of Captain John Powell. The island was therefore claimed on behalf of King James I.

On February 17th 1627, Captain Henry Powell landed with a party of 80 settlers and 10 slaves to occupy and settle the island. This expedition landed in Holetown formerly known as Jamestown. The colonists established a House of Assembly in 1639. It was the 3rd ever Parliamentary Democracy in the world (Barbados History).

People with good financial backgrounds and social connections with England were allocated land. Within a few years much of the land had been deforested to make way for tobacco and cotton plantations.
