William Hawkins was a General in the Revolution War, and he served with the North Carolina Troops, Upper Salisbury District, Surry County, NC. He lived in Surry and Stokes Counties, NC after he served in the military, year was 1789.

The verbal or nuncupative will of William Hawkins last deceased on the 29th day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and four in the presence of Hugh Martin and Elizabeth Martin his wife, and it being in his last sickness, presumes the intention of the said William Hawkins relative to the disposition of his property after his Dease to the following effect. To with that I William Hawkins of the County aforesaid and state aforesaid concerning my dissolution fast approaching, it is my will and desire that all my just debts should be paid off and discharged---And as to what little property it has pleased my maker to give me possession of it is my sincere wish and desire and also my will both real and personal as to the property, should remain in the possession and safe keeping of my dear beloved wife Nancy Hawkins the better to advance and nourish my dear children until the youngest should become of age or to the age of twenty one years, and then to be equally divided amongst my dear wife Nancy and my beloved children to with Benjamin Hawkins, William Hawkins, Lazarus Hawkins, James Hawkins, Joel Hawkins and Nancy Hawkins, provided nevertheless my dearly beloved wife Nancy Hawkins should not intermarry with any person and should she do so then it is my wish that equal distribution be immediately made--I desire my beloved wife Nancy Hawkins to be my Executrix.

So far as these witnesses (to with Hugh Martin and Elizabeth Martin) recollects or understands relative to the foregoing statement is true.

GENERAL WILLIAM HAWKINS (1750-1804)

 

William Hawkins was born in Baltimore County, Maryland, the son of John and Mary (Simpkins) Hawkins, on October 5, 1750, according to the register of St. Thomas Protestant Episcopal Church. Was in Surry Co.,NC. (Stokes, 1789) by the 26th of October 1772 where he started his settlement of 200 acres of land.

 

He joined the North Carolina Militia troops in the Revolutionary War, Upper Salisbury District. Received for his war effort, the following from North Carolina:

Cash, one pound silver. No.1291; 13th of October 1783, Land grant of 200 acres, #506; [This first grant was in Surry County, NC., signed by Governor Alexander Martin.]

 

10th of July 1899,1and grant # 117, 3.510 acres in Western District of NC (Tennessee). signed by H. Rutherford, D.S.

The Tennessee land was on the South Fork of Forked Deer River near present day Dyersburg, TN. His first wife is believed to be Jemima Brittain. They had three sons. William married (2) Nancy Tilley about 1789, and they had five children. He left a non-cupative will. [Stokes Co., 1804] [See Heritage of Stokes

According to Dexter Walter Hawkins, he also purchased two parcels of land in Buncombe County, NC in 1798, each 150 acres. One of these were on the Turkey Creek and was deeded by James Hawkins, Sr. to his son Benjamin Hawkins.
