Note on Marriage
Dean and Phyllis knew each other from childhood due to both of their families attending Palmyra United Methodist Church in Germanton, NC (36.322798,-80.231411). They dated off and on for several years during grade and high school.

They were married on 6/13/1954 and spent their honeymoon in Myrtle Beach.

Dean and Phyllis lived with Dean's parents after their marriage and soon moved into an upstairs apartment of a rental house at 2413 Greenway Avenue, Winston-Salem, NC (36.121176,-80.244312).
By 1959, Dean and Phyllis had saved enough money to buy a 1.1 acre lot at 6401 Germanton Road in Rural Hall (36.236422,-80.246054) from Bessie Hartgrove for $200. They contracted with Dick Banner to build them a house for $16,000 on the lot. By May of 1960 the house was complete and ready to move in. To complete the payment on the house, Dean and Phyllis took out a loan from Phyllis’s parents for $4,000; which was paid off in full on August 5th 1963. House Documents and Picture:

Throughout the late 60’s, 70’s and 80’s Dean and Phyllis went on many camping trips along with their camping friends, (D.E. and Minnie Ruth Westmoreland of Walnut Cove, Keith and Linda Johnson of King, R.B. and Sylvia Eaton of King and W.C. and Louise Nelson of Walnut Cove). This group was one of the first to camp at Owls Campground at Lake Norman. They would later camp at Shady Rest (35.571952,-81.024701) and Wildlife Woods Campground (35.56563593,-81.02882822) campgrounds. Story about clearing out the campsite. They took many trips to Philpot Lake in Virginia (36.804081,-80.051622) and camped at most of the camp grounds around the lake but mostly at Goose Point. Story of July 4th having 4 campers per site and having the Forest Service start new rules for all campers. They also vacationed at White Lake (34.64283,-78.498001) several times. Eggs and Ham story. In the summer of 1975 at White Lake, Dean caught the Correct Craft bug after seeing and hearing them on the lake. Soon after; he purchased a new 1976 17’ Mustang Correct Craft which became his pride and joy on the water.

In 1989, Dean and Phyllis purchased a 33’ camper and lot number 134 at Greenstreet Mountain Resort and Golf Course in Trap Hill, NC (36.36899,-81.080185). They spent most of their free time enjoying the mountains and golf course until Dean’s death in 1994. After Dean’s death, Phyllis continued to spend many days at Greenstreet until around 2007.

Marvin Dean Young, was born at home on 8/12/1934 to Marvin John Young and Ruby Otelia Lewis. His home was on Wall Road in Meadows Township, Walnut Cove, Stokes County, North Carolina (36.35078,-80.200721).
He attended Meadows School (36.366151,-80.190309) until the 8th grade. He then attended Walnut Cove High School (36.310198,-80.138792) where he graduated in 1953. At Walnut Cove, he was member of the Glee Club, Paper Staff, Student Council, President of the Monogram Club and a Bus Driver. He was also voted Most Popular in his graduating class.

Dean excelled at sports and was on the Baseball, Basketball and Football teams. During his junior year, Dean was captain of the football team and they went all the way to the 1951 North Carolina State Class A Championship Game. Although they lost the game 52-0 to Ahoskie High School, as of 2013 they are still the only Football team in Stokes County history to play in a Class A State Championship.

During Dean’s senior year, he was chosen over all other athletes at Walnut Cove to attend a big league baseball game in Winston-Salem between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Dean’s plans in high school were to go to college and to become a professional coach. However, after graduation, Dean decided not to go to college and he worked on the family farm until he started working at Hanes Hosiery (www.haneshosiery.com). He worked at Hanes Hosiery as a machinist until 1968.

In 1968 he formed a partnership with Von Ree Tuttle and they opened Clemmons Auto Parts in Clemmons, NC. In 1976 he sold out of Clemmons Auto Parts and went to work at King Auto Parts, located in the King Shopping Center (36.265588,-80.359966), through 1978.
In 1979, he began working in the Parts Department for Piedmont Aviation at Smith Reynolds Airport in Winston-Salem (36.138492,-80.229206) which was acquired by USAir in the late 80’s. Dean continued to work there until his death in 1994.
Throughout his life Dean stayed very connected to sports.

In early 1991, after having some chest discomfort, Dean had a quadruple heart bypass. He had a full recovery from the bypass and led his life with vigor until his death in late 1994. On the night of 12/18/1994 Dean was signing in Christmas Cantata at Palmyra UMC. He was to sing a solo part during the singing of "Go Tell It on the Mountain". While starting to sing his solo, he suddenly fell to the floor unconscious and was pronounce dead later that night at Stokes Reynolds Hospital in Danbury, NC. The cause of death was listed as a sudden cardiac death.

Note on Wife: Phyllis Marie SPENCER
Phyllis Marie Spencer was born at home on 3/15/1935 to John Lee Spencer and Lola Jane Hawkins. Her home was at the corner of NC Highway 8 and Rosebud Road, in Walnut Cove, Meadows Township, Stokes County, North Carolina (36.324969,-80.226379).
She attended Palmyra School (36.324969,-80.226379) until the 3rd grade. She then attended Germanton High School (36.26086,-80.240496) where she graduated in 1953 as class valedictorian.

After John was born, Phyllis remained at home until John was around 12. In 1978 she began working for the Stokes County School Food Service. She began by working in the cafeteria at Germanton Elementary (36.297423,-80.234442). In 1980 she was promoted to Cafeteria Manager at Walnut Cove Primary (36.30927,-80.139733). She moved on to be Cafeteria Manager at Southeastern Jr. High School (36.310198,-80.138792) in 1986 where she remained until retirement in 1996.

In 2007 Phyllis was becoming very forgetful and was diagnosed with early onset dementia. Her condition deteriorated until she had to be admitted to the hospital. She was quickly diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which was caused due to a lifetime of smoking. The lack of oxygen contributed to the onset of dementia. To recuperate she was placed in the Walnut Ridge Assisted Living Facility in Walnut Cove. After receiving oxygen for a couple of months she began to make a substantial recovery. She was about 2-3 weeks from being able to move back home when she tripped and fell over the tube on her portable oxygen tank and broke her hip and arm.
She underwent surgery that placed screws in her broken hip. However, her hip didn’t heal properly, due to her age, so a full hip replacement was required. On 12/31/2007 she underwent hip replacement surgery and then placed in the Nursing Center at Oak Summit for recuperation. After several weeks she was able to leave Oak Summit and move back home.
While being in the hospital and nursing facilities Phyllis had stopped smoking all together due to the smoking restrictions in the facilities and when she returned home her dementia had gotten recognizable better. However, in the fall of 2008 she began smoking again against the wishes of her friends and family. Within a month her dementia had returned and continued to worsen.
By late 2008 she was under the care of an attendant for 6 hours a day. After her 74th birthday party at Sam’s Pizza in Walnut Cove on 3/15/2009 she fell asleep on the couch at her house while smoking. The cigarette caught her night gown on fire and burned her badly. She remained in the Burn Unit at Baptist Hospital for 4 months until she succumb to her injuries.
