Note on Husband: Benjamin YOUNG (1)
Benjamin came to Baltimore, MD at an early age, met and married Zipporah Gist in 1751. They came to the fork of Dan River and Town Fork Creek in Anson County, NC (later Rowan, then Surry , then Stokes) and settled.
They went back to Baltimore where first child Rebecca was born in 1752 and then came back to Stokes and got a Granville Land Grant of 699 acres on 8/10/1762 . (See The Granville District of NC 1748-1763, Vol 3, Hoffman, Page 114). The land was on the north side of the Town Fork Creek and Dan River. They were probably the first white residents in what is now Stokes County, NC.
They built a stockade against the Indians on their land and called the place "Old Town". Here he farmed, hunted, and fished.
One of the stories handed down through the years is that nearby Bull Creek got its name from one of his hunting escapades. The story goes that he went up the creek and stalked a large, ferocious buffalo, and attacked him with his flint rifle. The buffalo was wounded and terribly mad and charged him so that he lost his rifle and took to a tree, where the buffalo kept him treed until the next day.
Christopher Young, son of Rhoda, was apprenticed to Benjamin 9/8/1796 to learn the art of wagon making. Rhoda was probably a daughter inlaw.
Letters of administration of the estate were issued to son Benjamin Young, George Young, and Joseph Winston on 12/14/1809. There are many references to land transfer in Stokes County Deeds, Vol. I and II,
Note on Husband: Benjamin YOUNG (2)
Benjamin( Sr.) Young is listed in 1790 on the Stokes Co., NC census with 1 M - 16 and 1 M+ 16 and 3 females.
Also listed besides Benjamin Sr.'s sons is a James Young with 3 M +16, 3 M - 18 and 5 females. Who is he??
Benjamin is listed as a taxpayer in Surry County 1782 in NC Taxpayers 1679-1790.
Also listed are Frost Snow, Henry and Jacob Snow in Surry Co. 1782 from same source. Moses and William Gist are listed in Rowan Co. 1767.
In the book same name but 1701-1786 is listed Benjamin, Cecil, James and Henry Snow years given 1771-72.
Benjamin Young was one of the first if not first white man to settle in what is now Stokes County. It was still Anson County when he built a cabin surrounded by a stockade at the junction of Dan River and Town Fork Creek, which afterwards became the first white settlement in Stokes County, now known as Oldtown. Marriage records and other documents show that most Youngs of Stokes and bordering areas of Forsyth and Surry can trace their ancestry to this Benjamin. He married Zipporah Gist, daughter of Nathaniel and Mary Howard Gist and her father Nathaniel and brother Christopher came with them to NC.
Volume 1 Records of the Moravian in NC mention contact with Captain "Guest" and his son in law Ben Young, of the Town Fork settlement. Benjamin went to the Moravian settlement at Bethabara to have grain ground and spent the night there. Nathaniel Gist was a Captain in the militia and referred to as a "beloved neighbor of Bethabara".
Nathaniel and Mary Howard Gist moved to the western part of NC in 1756, but the Youngs remained in the Stokes area.
The part beginning with data on Benjamin Young was taken from articles in Stokes County Heritage by Violet K. Young.
August 10 1762 Benjamin was granted 699 acres by the state of NC. It was lying on the north side of Town Fork of the Dan River in Rowan County, NC
In 1770 when Surry formed it was lying in that county. In 1789 it became a part of Stokes. Benjamin and his family are listed in the first US census of 1790 in Stokes County, NC.
A lot of the data on Zipporah's family came from Rev. Thomas Young of Sarasota, Fl. and James R. Terry of Miami, Fl. James mentions that he got much of his information on the Howard family from THE GIST FAMILY OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND ITS MARYLAND ANTECEDENTS, by Wilson Gee in 1934 and the Gist data from BALTIMORE COUNTY FAMILIES 1659-1759 by Robert W. Barnes in 1889.
